my dad passed away
I was working on sleepies with the intention of it being my next vignette prototype after I did To Dream of Dancing, and The End.
My dad died on April 2nd 2024, so I decided to take a pause on Sleepies to work on Grob
Sleepies is about a woman who's partner dies while she is sleeping. He visits her as she's in the threshold between sleep, wake, and death. We play as her while she comes to grips with the loss of her partner by playing only her vague impressions and dreams. We drive with her as he haunts her from the passenger seat. We walk through limbo together.
I was initially making something inspired by the deaths of my grandparents, a childhood friend, and a girlfriend. But, with my dads passing it became more present and I decided to take more time with the project.
make your peace while you drive. they come to you in quiet times when your mind wanders
sleepies is a typing game. you must decide who is speaking and what to say. is it your own mind coming to terms with the loss of a loved one? Are they communicating with you truths from beyond the grave? Each letter you hit is a note on a piano. the words we can and cannot say begin to play. telling us something without using words at all. the words become music.
do we follow them do we become ghosts
the masks we wear
who is speaking. the shell of us. the projection of us. In sleepies I use video footage rather than image textures for the faces. the mesh can speak and move about as it does and the facial texture can emote the same, or different. the layers of a person. sometimes video footage is projected on the scene as well, leading to layers upon layers upon layre s unpa
the mesh has a face. and a face plays on top. blending. burning.
still here
sleepies
someone dies while you sleep and they visit your dreams
